November - The Day You Begin

Our November book is The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson. It’s a heartening book about finding the courage to connect, even when you feel scared and alone. There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you. There are many reasons to feel different. Maybe it’s how you look or talk, or where you’re from; maybe it’s what you eat, or something just as random. This beautiful and inclusive story encourages children to find beauty in their own lives and to share it with the world. The four child characters in this book feel alone until they begin to share their stories and discover that it is always possible to find someone a little like you.

Volunteers will discuss that we are all unique and special but also alike. Furthermore, we will talk with the students about inclusive behaviors such as …

    1. Greet each other authentically-Smile, use names, offer help
    2. Don’t make fun of others
    3. Resolve misunderstandings and disagreements immediately
    4. Listen, listen, listen
    5. Speak clearly, directly, and honestly
    6. Use your voice
    7. Understand that we all have a contribution, so make sure all voices are heard
    8. Ask others to share their ideas, thoughts, and experiences
    9. Be brave
