    Remember Tiffany Barry's choir students, who visited the Cedar Creek Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Home in December? Yesterday, students returned for the final phase of their PBL unit "How Does Music Move You?" The students performed music they had been rehearsing since their last visit based on their interviews about songs that were personally meaningful to the residents.

  • Spring cleaning pays off for Sartorette

    A small act of kindness can have a big impact! Sartorette partnered with Goodwill in an effort to swap gently-used goods for funds, with a goal of filling one 8600 pound trailer for a $1,250 donation. But Sartorette families showed up in a BIG WAY and blew past the goal, filling TWO trailers with a total of 13,720 pounds of donated items -- earning the school $1,993!

  • Steindorf Students Pilot Classrooms of the Future with Augmented Reality

    Steindorf students experienced Show and Tell 2.0 today thanks to the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. Using simple, modified smart phones that interact with a code to map the classroom, students were able to view 3D models of planets, coral reefs, volcanoes, weather phenomena and more, as teachers guided exploration and discussion around the standards-aligned activities.     Mrs. Hyatt's fourth grade classroom at Farnham is holding a "Pennies for Puerto Rico" drive over the next two weeks, inviting all students and staff to raid their couch cushions and contribute spare change to the cause. All funds will go to http://unidosporpuertorico.com/en/, an initiative enacted by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatrice Rossello, to support those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.     Congratulations to Cambrian's 2017 Teacher of the Year Dean Hodges! Mr. Hodges is a special education teacher who works with students in grades 3-5 at Sartorette, where he is beloved by colleagues, students and families alike for his positive energy and can-do spirit. We were thrilled to join him at the Santa Clara County Office of Education's Teacher Recognition Celebration last night where he, along with Teachers of the Year from all 36 districts in the county, was acknowledged for the impact he has on students and his community.     Steindorf students dazzled visitors at last night's STEAM fair, an event like a science fair dialed all the way up to 11! Students picked a STEAM subject to focus on (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Math) and developed capstone projects for presentation to the public; the presentations varied from robots, to video game models, to beautiful art work to cooking lessons. Students were on hand to answer questions about their work or demonstrate their inventions. Congrats to students and staff alike on a remarkable evening!

    The hottest ticket in town was at Bagby Elementary this morning for Ms. Montes' second grade class' production of Hamilton, complete with impressive displays of both lyrical dexterity and knowledge of American history.   • Young Musicians Amaze at Elementary Music Festival

    Beautiful tunes delighted the standing room-only crowd last night at the Elementary Band and Choir Festival! Over 150 students from across our four elementary schools displayed the results of a year of hard work and hours of practice -- and they sounded marvelous! Thank you to Music Teachers Mr. Golden, Mr. Sanchez and Mrs. Hanck, as well as the many supportive parent volunteers, for making this night possible!

  • Price Students Donate $10,000 for Hydration Stations

    At last night's board meeting, Price students Sarah Shaw and Cassie Kwan presented a proposal on behalf of the Leadership Class to donate more than $10,000 for the installation of two new hydration stations at the school. The stations serve as sensor-activated water bottle fillers and drinking fountains, such as those already installed at Sartorette and Steindorf. Leadership students decided to fund this project after breaking sales records at their student store thanks to the additional of whole-fruit popsicles and popcorn. Next year, all Cambrian schools will have hydration stations installed; because of the generosity and foresight of these Price students, the middle school will now have three to support its larger student body.

  • Cambrian Open Houses Wow Visitors

    Hundreds of families and friends turned out last night for our elementary school Open Houses, an annual tradition where students and staff showcase all the learning and growth that has happened throughout the year. A highlight at Fammatre was the school's new chicken and rabbit enclosure, pictured here, where students learn about the animals' life-cycle and keeping.

  • Second Harvest Food Bank Honors Cambrian Schools and Students

    Second Harvest loves Cambrian Schools! Our district recently received Second Harvest Food Bank's Platinum award -- the organization's second highest honor-- in recognition of the remarkable generosity demonstrated by Cambrian students, staff and families at food drives and fundraiser's throughout the year. And Farnham kindergarten student Nima O'Donnell received the organization's Blue Diamond Award -- the very HIGHEST honor -- for his remarkably successful Cookies for Cans Drive. Trading home baked cookies for pantry items, he collected over 410 lbs of food all on his own! Congratulations to Nima, and to all of our students who opened their hearts this year to those in need, on this remarkable accomplishment!

  • Family Kindness Event at Bagby Makes Big Impact

    This week Bagby held their third and final Kindness Night for the 16-17 school year. Students and families participated in a number of projects designed to spread compassion including: making friendship bracelet kits and cards for new Bagby students; assembling laundry packs for San Jose Homeless; writing Advocacy Postcards to CA Legislators about issues that matter to them; making paracord Survival Bracelets for deployed soldiers; creating shoe kits for children in Uganda from upcycled denim; and making environmentally friendly household cleaner to protect the environment the next time they do chores!

  • Cambrian Hosts Visiting GLAD Educators

    We were delighted to host a cohort of educators from Minnesota this week, who came to observe Cambrian School District's exemplary Guided Language Acquisition by Design (GLAD) in action. Our visitors observed classrooms at three school sites to see how our teachers incorporate academic English instruction into a variety of topics, then debriefed at the district office about what they had learned.

  • Cambrian Announces Certificated & Classified Employees of the Year

    We are delighted to share with our community Cambrian's Classified and Certificated Employees of the Year. Classified EOY Leslie Duquette is an Instructional Aide at Fammatre Elementary who has been giving our students extra help and lots of TLC since 2005. Mr. Dean Hodges teaches a Mild/Moderate Special Day Class for students in grades 3-5 at Sartorette and has been with the district for 16 years. We look forward to formally recognizing these and other outstanding employees at our annual awards ceremony on May 25th. Congratulations to these outstanding individuals who have a tremendous impact in the lives of our students!

    Today Cambrian School District is celebrating the Day of the Employee, an annual tradition of giving thanks for the amazing things staff do throughout the year on behalf of our students. Members of the Governing Board and District Office Administration Team visit staff to thank them for making our district a wonderful place to learn and work. Whether in front of the classroom or “behind the scenes”, it takes hundreds of dedicated and caring people to ensure each of our students receives the best education possible.   • Run, Barracudas, Run!

    Bagby students and staff spent their afternoon working up a sweat outdoors to raise money for Science Camp, Family Science Nights, and other hands-on STEM experiences for students. Last year's event raised approximately $15,000, we're optimistic that this year's runners will do the same!   • Price welcomes community for annual Open House

    The Annual Price Middle School Open House brought hundreds of students, families and staff together to celebrate each other and student growth over the past school year. The evening began with a barbecue hosted by the energetic Price staff, who served hundreds of hot dogs to their hungry guests! Athletic, dance and music exhibitions, as well as an art gallery, entertained the community in addition to the usual ope house fare. Congrats on another successful event, Price students and staff!

  • Steindorf Math Stars Shine

    Congratulations to Steindorf math whizzes Johan Ko and Anna Figge, who took second place in a Middle School Leapfrog event against 25 other teams from throughout the county at West Valley College's Math Field Day! Steindorf also recently hosted a Math Kangaroo competition, in which 22 students in grades 1-7 demonstrated their keen mathematical skills!

    The competition was fierce Friday at Price's annual Student/Staff Basketball Game. This beloved tradition pits kids against adults for a great cause -- the event raised nearly $1,000 to help defray the costs of participating in athletics for students in need!

  • Board Passes Resolution Reaffirming Immigrant Students' Rights at School

    Last night, the board passed a resolution “Affirming Support of Equal Access to Education Regardless of Immigration Status at Schools.” The resolution reaffirms that CSD and the Board are committed to the success of all students irrespective of their immigration status or citizenship, and believe that our schools should be a welcoming place for all students and families.   • Sartorette Student Nabs First Place in Future Chefs Contest!

    Congratulations to Sartorette's Zoe Tang, whose Bundles of Joy recipe earned her FIRST PLACE at yesterday's Future Chefs contest! Her stuffed ham, egg and cheese croissant bowled judged over and would be a perfect addition to a brunch for Easter or other spring celebrations. Farnham's Sophia Dissly also took home fourth place for her Farfalle with Sweet Italian Sausage, Peas & Mushrooms, a quick and healthy weeknight supper!   • Steindorf is for the Birds!

    Steindorf Fourth Graders partnered with the Wildlife Associates and, through sustained inquiry, hands-on experiences, and in-depth research, have learned about wind turbines and their harmful effects on local birds of prey. Today they presented their final bird-friendly wind turbine prototypes to the community and their mentors from the Wildlife Associates. Suggestions included turbines with horizontal blades, lights, and even turbines designed to look like giant purple flowers(purple repels insects, a bird food source)! Congratulations to the students and thanks to the Wildlife Associates for making this possible!

    At the Thursday, Feb. 16 board meeting, Trustees adopted a resolution supporting the My Name, My Identity program, joining 682 other districts across the nation in promising to build a culture of respect in which students and staff from all cultures can expect to have their name celebrated and pronounced correctly.   • Bagby Families "Do Good Together"

    Bagby students in grades K-2 along with their families came together to spread the love throughout our community Monday night, just in time for Valentine's Day! All told, participants decorated 35 flower pots for Meals on Wheels Clients via The Health Trust; filled a large box full of tissue paper “thank you" flowers for families adopting shelter pets from the Humane Society Silicon Valley; made dozens handmade valentines for pen pals abroad via Kids Send the World; and created a beautiful Kindness Quilt. Bagby's next DGT event will be held in the spring for students in upper grades.

  • Two Cambrian Future Chefs to Represent District in Regional Contest

    Congrats to Sartorette's Zoe Tang and Farnham's Sophia Dissly for being selected as contestants in the Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge! They will be competing with five other students from neighboring districts this March to prepare the best "healthy comfort food" recipe for a judging panel.   • Cambrian Unplugs

    Thank you to the dozens of families who took the #TechFreeTime Weekend Challenge! Families pledged to stay off their gadgets this weekend; the most common pledge, at 16% of respondents, was for 8 hours of screen-free time, while six families pledged to stay tech-free for the entire holiday weekend! How did they spend their time? 90 percent of respondents chose to play outside, followed by 71% who played board or card games together and 69% who spent that time reading a book. Thanks again to the Steindorf 4th graders who developed the challenge for their PBL assignments: Michaela, Amber, Raaey, Devin, Sathvik, Hazen, Parker, Aidan, and Ilan!

    At last night's board meeting we had the pleasure of welcoming our new Trustee, Aletta Godden! She is the mother of a student at Fammatre and is an active volunteer with the Cambrian Park Kiwanis Club.   • Sartorette and SJFD Team Up to Help Children in Need

    Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night could keep these pint-sized do-gooders from visiting SJFD Station #9 today to help with the fire department's toy drive! Sartorette students have been collecting toys for children in need for two weeks, and today stopped by the station to complete their donations! The visit was made complete with hot chocolate and a tour of a real live fire engine! Thank you to the firefighters, parent volunteers, staff and generous students who made today a success!

  • Steindorf 4th Graders Complete PBL on Community Involvement

    Today Steindorf's fourth graders presented the results of their most recent Project Based Learning challenge, based around the question "How can I contribute to make my community a better place?" Students presented on a diverse array of topics and ways that kids can make a big impact on the world around them, including educating peers about water conservation, organizing weekly workouts and healthy snack days to fight childhood obesity, and creating student support groups for those who are being bullied. Congrats on a fantastic set of presentations!

  • Superintendent and Trustees Represent Cambrian at CSBA Conference

    Last week, Superintendent Dr. Andrews and the Board of Trustees attended the annual California School Boards Association Conference, along with over 1,000 educational leaders from across the state who gather to discuss issues facing public education. The event gave them the opportunity to learn about the state budget and its fiscal impact on schools, new legislation, and ways to improve equity and access for all students. The conference is a valuable opportunity for our district leaders to explore ways to further support students, staff and the entire district community.

  • Schools and Families Supporting Cambrian Writers Together

    Thanks to the 130 parents who came to our Writing Workshop Parent Night on Dec. 7! Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the processes Cambrian teachers are using to deliver individualized writing feedback to students, as well as how families can help their children grow as writers at home!   • Students Assist With Staff Learning

    Cambrian's Teachers on Special Assignment Chau Chieng and Michelle Ignacio work with staff throughout the year to develop Guided Language Acquisition by Design (GLAD) teaching strategies, and last week they had some very special helpers-- Ms. Bacon's fifth grade students! Eleven teachers spent four days observing an Ecosystems unit being taught by a certified GLAD trainer, while being coached through the process at the same time. In the afternoon, staff debriefed together about what they observed and then created their own units based on what they had learned. Thanks to Ms. Bacon and her students for helping staff continue to improve their craft!

  • Happy 60th Birthday, Farnham!

    Today Farnham students, staff and families celebrated the 60th anniversary of the school's founding in 1956. Members of the Farnham family were present, and the festivities included 50s-style costumes, the unveiling of some commemorative artifacts and an aerial photo of the student body in the shape of a giant 60.     Cambrian students, staff and families donated more than 1,500 POUNDS OF CANDY for our troops overseas and first responders here at home through Operation Gratitude.   • Cambrian Schools rock the vote

    The votes have been tallied and the winner decided-- at least in Cambrian Schools! Price and Steindorf collaborated on a mock election to give students practice voting well in advance of their 18th birthdays. The results? Clinton won with a landslide 523 electoral college votes and 68.5% of the popular vote; Trump earned 15 electoral votes and 14.9% of the popular (third party candidates earned a combined 16.5% of the popular vote). Students also voted in favor of the school bond Prop 51, the Prop 62 death penalty repeal, the Prop 63 ammunition and gun regulations, and voted in favor of Campbelle Union High School District's Measure AA to fund school repairs. Grown-ups, make sure your voice is heard today, as well! Polls close at 8pm!

    This weekend, 22 Cambrian students in grades 5-8 attended the College Day Advancing Latinx Achievement and Success Conference at San Jose State University. The event included campus tours, student and family panels and hands of workshops about college applications and financial aid, all designed to help families overcome barriers to getting into and thriving in college. Student Anthony Medina even had the opportunity to meet keynote Speaker Astronaut Jose Hernandez!

    Congratulations to Rosemary Meehan, who was officially appointed as our new Student Services Program Specialist at last week's board meeting! Ms. Meehan has worked for the past 15 years in public education, serving as a moderate/severe Special Day Class teacher at Bagby for the past four years. Ms. Meehan holds a BA in English from University of California Santa Barbara, and her Masters in Education with an Emphasis in Special Education from San Jose State.     Congratulations to Jacqueline Smith, who was officially appointed as our new Coordinator of Educational Technology at last night's board meeting! She was Fammatre’s Teacher of the Year in 2012, and holds a BA in International Studies from the University of Washington as well as her National Board Certification.   • Cambrian Students on a Roll... and on Foot!

    Fammatre students, families and staff celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Walk and Bike to School Day this morning by commuting en masse to school from nearby Doerr Park on foot, bike, scooter and skateboard! Students were greeted on campus with stickers and healthy breakfast treats in recognition for this step towards a healthier body and environment, and wrapped up festivities with a special assembly featuring Council Member Don Rocha and Kevin O'Connor from the San Jose Department of Transportation.

    We were delighted to honor Cambrian's 2016 Teacher of the Year Sarah Payne at the 47th Annual Santa Clara County Teacher Recognition Celebration last night! Ms. Payne, who teahes 4th grade, was nominated by her colleagues at Bagby Elementary School for her "professional commitment and deeply caring spirit," and she joined the Steindorf faculty for the school's inaugural year.   • District-Wide Professional Learning Day Focuses on Academic English Skills

    Is this the world's tallest group of elementary school students? Nope! While students enjoyed an early release yesterday afternoon, staff from all six Cambrian SD schools were hitting the books. Teachers had the opportunity to learn from peer experts about the Guided Language Acquisiton by Design (GLAD) method, which is designed to help students absorb academic English skills -- which will serve them through K-12, college and beyond-- as they learn science, social studies, math and other subjects.

  • District Staff Present CAASPP Data at Board Meeting

    Cambrian School District staff will be sharing aggregate student data from the 2015-2016 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) at this week’s Governing Board meeting on Thursday, September 15. The new assessment was administered for the second time in all California public schools last spring, and the results offer a brief snapshot of student progress toward mastery of rigorous Common Core Standards in the subjects of Math and English Language Arts (ELA).

    At this week's board meeting we were delighted to honor our first three Good Apples of the year! This is a special recognition for community members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving Cambrian Schools. Thank you to Andre Cutuli, who built two "Free Little Libraries" at Fammatrey Elementary School for his Eagle Scout project; Christy Dawson, longtime Fanrham Elementary School volunteer and current coordinator of Farnham's 6oth anniversary celebration; and Veni Ayer, who has been volunteering at Sartorette Elementary School for four years and recently took on the role of coaching Girls on the Run!

    Last night, the Board of Trustees officially appointed Mrs. Sara Brown as Price Middle School's new Assistant Principal, and Mrs. Natalie Gioco as Price's new Principal! Mrs. Gioco has over 19 years' experience in school administration and classroom teaching at the elementary, middle, high school and adult education level. Mrs. Brown also brings nearly two decades of experience in education to her new role, having served as guidance counselor for 1,480 students at Kennedy Middle School for the past twelve years and taught both elementary and middle grades prior to that.   • Meet the Steindforf Stampede!

    Steindorf STEAM School's new logo and mascot, the Steindorf Stampede, was officially unveiled at last night's board meeting, presented by student artist Maggie Garcia and Principal Kristi Schwiebert. Dozens of students participated in a contest to design the new mascot, and Maggie's Stallion design tied with Christopher Fredrick's STEAM Knight. The two students collaborated with Price Art Teacher Carrie Lyons-Lao to create a design that merged both visions and exemplifies the spirit of the new school.

    We are delighted to announce Mr. Mujtaba Rauf as Cambrian’s new Director of Informational Technology! Mr. Rauf has more than twelve years of experience in the IT industry and public school sector. For the past six years, he has worked in New Haven School District where his department supports 800+ staff members and 20,000 technology devices.     It's official! We are proud to share with our community Cambrian's Classified and Certificated Employees of the Year! Classified EOY Lydia Shrader handles Accounts Payable, Purchasing and Attendance at our district office, where she had worked for 18 years. Certificated Employee of the Year Sarah Payne teaches 4th grade at Bagby, where she is also the PBIS Lead and even composed a theme song for the school! Congrats to both of these remarkable ladies who do incredible things for our students each and every day!

    At the April 20th Board Meeting, the Governing Board eagerly greeted, unanimously approved and welcomed Mrs. Darlene Norman as our new Director of Student Services. Mrs. Norman brings a wealth of practical leadership experience both in special education and student services. In addition, Mr. Matt Hill was appointed as Principal of Farnham Elementary School for the 2016-17 School Year. Mr. Hill has been in Cambrian for the past 10 years as a teacher leader, assistant principal at Price Middle School and soon to be the principal at Farnham.     The Annual Price Middle School Open House brought hundreds of students, families and staff together to celebrate each other and student growth over the past school year. The evening began with a barbecue hosted by the energetic Price staff, who served over 600 hot dogs to their hungry guests!     Congratulations to Farnham fourth-grader Annalynn Ballester, whose ‘Happy Egg Pizza Pie’ earned her the second place prize at the Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge!     Price 8th graders had the enriching experience of participating in mock trials at the Santa Clara County Superior Court last week.
