Substitute Teacher Classroom Technology Guide
This simple guide is intended for substitute teachers who are working in a classroom on a short-term basis. Depending on your classroom, you will be using either an iMac, Windows PC, or Chromebook to connect to the document camera and to display on the classroom TV.
Long-term substitute teachers should take advantage of the self-paced online training available on Alludo.
Select the Device You Are Using
Apple (iMac or Macbook)
Displaying on the Classroom TV
If you are using a Macbook (Apple laptop) or iMac (Apple desktop), follow these steps to display your computer screen on the Classroom TV.
- Make sure you are logged into the iMac or Macbook. You should have received login credentials from the front office.
- Find the remote control for the Classroom TV.
- Press the Power button on the remote
- If you see a display that refers to either Airplay or AppleTV, then you are ready to connect your Macbook or iMac.
- You may have to select a new input on the TV until you find the one that the Apple TV is connected to. To do this, press the Input button. You will see a list of inputs for the TV. They may just have generic port names (like below) or they may be labelled (e.g. Apple TV).
- Press the Input button to select a different input. Wait 5 seconds to see if the display shows the Apple TV device. If it does not, press the Input button again to display the inputs, and press it one more time to move to the next input.
- Follow these steps to display your iMac or Macbook display on the Classroom TV.
Using the Document Camera
The classroom teacher may have left your directions for using the document camera. If not, here are some general guidelines that should work in most classroom settings.
- Follow the directions above for connecting your iMac or Macbook to the Classroom TV.
- Turn on the document camera.
- If you are borrowing a Macbook from the front office, you will need to connect it to the document camera. Your laptop has an adapter that you can use to connect to the doc camera.
- Plug the USB-C connector (A) into your laptop.
- The document camera should have a cable that is either USB (B) or HDMI (C). Plug that into the proper port on the adapter. - Follow these directions to start the AverTouch application. This will allow you to display your doc camera's view on the Classroom TV.
Windows PC
Displaying on the Classroom TV
If you are using a Windows PC, follow these steps to display your computer screen on the TV.
- Make sure you are logged into the Windows PC. You should have received login credentials from the classroom teacher or the front office.
- Turn on the document camera.
- Find the remote control for the Classroom TV.
- Press the Power button on the remote
- If the Classroom TV is already displaying what is on your computer screen, then you can stop here!
- You may have to select a new input on the TV until you find the one that the Windows PC is connected to. To do this, press the Input button. You will see a list of inputs for the TV. They may just have generic port names (like below) or they may be labelled (e.g. Teacher Computer).
- Press the Input button to select a different input. Wait 5 seconds to see if the classroom TV displays what is on your computer screen. If it does not, press the Input button again to display the inputs, and press it one more time to move to the next input until the classroom TV displays what is on your computer screen.
Using the Document Camera
The classroom teacher may have left your directions for using the document camera. If not, here are some general guidelines that should work in most classroom settings.
- Follow the directions above for connecting your Windows PC to the Classroom TV.
- Turn on the document camera.
- Depending on how the classroom is setup, you have two options:
a) You may just need to use the Camera/PC button to toggle between displaying what is under your doc camera and displaying what is on your computer screen.
OR
b) The document camera may be directly connected to the Classroom TV, in which case you can use the remote control to find the input the document camera is connected to.
You may have to select a new input on the TV until you find the one that the Windows PC is connected to. To do this, press the Input button. You will see a list of inputs for the TV. They may just have generic port names (like below) or they may be labelled (e.g. Doc Camera).
Press the Input button to select a different input. Wait 5 seconds to see if the classroom TV displays what is under your document camera. If it does not, press the Input button again to display the inputs, and press it one more time to move to the next input until the classroom TV displays what is under your document camera.
