On November 20, 2025, the Cambrian School Board established a School Consolidation Advisory Committee (SCAC). The SCAC will be a diverse advisory group made up of parents, teachers, classified staff, administrators, and community members. The committee will review enrollment, facility use, and budget data and ultimately provide recommendations to the Board of Trustees in late February.

We recognize how sensitive and emotional the topic of school consolidation can be. As educators and community members, we understand that a school is more than a building; it holds memories, relationships, and traditions. But a building is just that: a structure. Our strength lies in the people who fill these spaces and in the cohesive, caring community that defines Cambrian.

Consolidation does not diminish who we are. Instead, it is a way to unite our resources more efficiently so we can continue delivering exceptional educational experiences districtwide.

Over the past several months, our Budget Advisory Committee (BAC), which includes staff, parents, and community members, has met regularly to review our financial data and develop potential solutions. The BAC has been tasked with identifying $2.6 million in reductions to ensure fiscal stability and avoid the possibility of state intervention. Their thoughtful, collaborative work continues to guide our path forward.

To maintain long-term financial health and protect the high-quality education our students deserve, the Board of Trustees is now considering several long-term structural solutions, including possible school consolidation.  Some of the factors driving this consideration include:

• Underutilized Facilities: Some sites are operating far below capacity, increasing per-student costs and spreading resources thin.
• Cost Savings: Consolidation can reduce operational expenses such as utilities, maintenance, and administrative overhead.
• Revenue Opportunities: Optimizing facilities may allow us to lease or repurpose unused space to strengthen our financial position.
• Long-Term Stability: With continued enrollment declines projected across Santa Clara County, early action helps protect our future.

The School Consolidation Advisory Committee will:

• Meet in public according to Brown Act regulations
• Review data on enrollment, facilities, staffing, and finances
• Utilize weighted criteria encompassing educational, financial, demographic, facility, and community factors
• Develop recommendations for potential school consolidation based on clear criteria

This process will be guided by transparency, empathy, and the shared goal of supporting every student in Cambrian. The committee will base its final recommendation on data and a variety of criteria.

A recommendation from the SCAC to the Cambrian School Board is tentatively scheduled for February 26 at the Board of Trustees meeting in the Professional Development Center (PDC) at the Cambrian School District Office (4115 Jacksol Dr).

• Enrollment and Demographics: Considers current and projected enrollment, population trends, and student demographics. Note: School Closure Criteria and All Sites - Out of District Student Comparison History Documents have been revised.
• Educational Impact: Assesses how the options affect student learning, programs, and instructional quality.
• Financial Impact: Evaluates cost savings, revenue potential, and overall effect on the General Fund.
• Facility Condition and Safety: Reviews the facility's condition and safety standards.
• Community and Geographic Factors: Considers proximity, neighborhood impact, and community use of facilities.
• Student and Family Impact: Assesses the effect on students’ and families’ daily routines, well-being, and engagement.
