2026 Board Elections

Any person, regardless of sex, who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the state, a resident of the Cambrian School District, a registered voter, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed a member of a governing board of a school district without further qualifications. (California Education Code Section 35107)

Members of the Board may participate in the same health and welfare benefits program provided to district employees and may participate in the District's Supplemental Retirement Plan, in which the District will contribute $80 per month during their term of service. Cambrian Board Bylaw 9250

To encourage voter participation and candidacy for the Governing Board, the District shall pay a portion of the costs associated with candidate statements, including printing, handling, translation, mailing, and/or electronic distribution, in accordance with Elections Code 13307. Cambrian Board Bylaw 9220

• All candidates shall pay a minimum of $500 towards the cost. The $500 payment is due at the time of filing. Candidates' minimum payment of costs will be determined by the number of candidates running per election.
  • In an election year in which three (3) Governing Board seats are up for election, the Cambrian School District shall contribute up to $15,000 to the Registrar of Voters to offset the costs associated with candidate statements, including printing, handling, translation, mailing, and/or electronic distribution. This amount shall be divided equally among all candidates. Estimated example costs are provided below.
  • Candidate statements shall be limited to no more than 200 words. (Elections Code 13307)
  • When the elections official allows for the electronic distribution of candidate statements, a candidate for the Board may, in addition to or instead of submitting a candidate statement for inclusion in the mailed voter's pamphlet, prepare and submit a candidate statement for electronic distribution.

Board members are expected and encouraged to:

• Ask thoughtful questions, contribute to discussions, and support the Cambrian School District in achieving its goals
• Attend, actively participate, and be prepared for Board Meetings, Workshops, and Special Meetings.
  • A minimum of 22 meetings are held during the school year.
  • Meetings are generally scheduled on the first and third Thursdays of each month and typically begin at 5:30 p.m.; however, dates and times may vary.
• Prior to each Board meeting, Board members are expected to review the agenda and meet with the Superintendent to discuss and seek clarification on agenda items
• Stay informed by reading the weekly Superintendent’s Board Update
• Attend events at their assigned (“Board Buddy”) school (e.g., Home and School Club Meetings, Open House,  and Back to School Night)

• Maintain confidentiality at all times

• Demonstrate professionalism and respect in all interactions

Committees:

Trustees may volunteer to serve on temporary subcommittees. Current Cambrian subcommittees include:

• Board Policy Committee (as needed)
• Bond Oversight Committee
• Budget Advisory Committee (as needed)

Board members may also choose to participate in external committees and organizations beyond Cambrian.

Board Member Trainings & Conferences

Required:

• Ethics Training every two years (Assembly Bill 2158)
• K-12 Public Education School Finance  (Assembly Bill 640) Beginning April 2027

Optional, but highly recommended:

• Orientation for New Trustees
• Masters in Governance Program (five-course series)
• Brown Act Training
• Annual Education Conference & Trade Show (Early December for 3-4 days)
